Universal Pre-K

Hours: 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program (UPK) is a full day program established by the New York State Education Department to provide a preschool experience for the children of eligible families.

The Program:

Alonzo A. Daughtry Memorial Day Care Center's full day UPK Program is designed for a maximum of twenty students, who are transitioning into the kindergarten the following year.  This is a pre-school program with a qualified teacher and two assistants in the class. Children will attend the program Monday through Friday for 7 hours each day. All selected participants are eligible for our Aftercare Program.

Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) students learn through a variety of stimulating, hands-on experiences, all designed to advance their development and prepare them for kindergarten. Our UPK program goals are aligned with state learning standards, ensuring that our curriculum builds the skills that children need for future academic success. Above all else, our teachers are responsive to children’s varying needs and abilities, which builds each child’s confidence and instills a love of learning! Teachers maintain an assessment portfolio for each child, which tracks developmental progress using photographs, checklists and work samples. Portfolios are stored in the classroom with their journals, alphabet books, and other ‘work in progress’ — these materials are always available for parents to review.

Who is Eligible for UPK?

Students who will reach the age of four by December 1 of the year of enrollment in the program, and who are residents of Brooklyn, New York, are eligible to apply.
